To answer that question we need to define what a Justice of the Peace (JP) is and what they do. In Australia, a JP is an important community member of the community who is authorised to witness and certify documents, administer oaths and affirmations, and perform a variety of other legal services.

A good JP should be able to communicate articulately and effectively. They must be able to simplify legal language and procedures in a way that is easily understood by people coming to them. Good communication skills also help clients to feel comfortable.
Attention to Detail:
A good JP needs to ensure that all documents are filled out meticulously including signatures and stamps. Attention to detail to avoid and/or identify errors before certification is essential.
Trustworthiness:
A JP must be honest in their dealings. A JP is responsible for certifying documents. Many of these documents have legal implications. Trustworthiness is imperative.
Accessibility:
A good JP can’t hide away in the shadows. They should be willing to be reached during any hours they designate. JPs are serving the community and can’t lose sight of that.
Willingness to Continue Education:
A good JP makes a commitment to professional development. If there are changes in laws that affect their services they should be aware and up to date. It’s also helpful for a JP to seek helpful skill improvement such as communication skills.
Professionalism:
Professionalism is vital in a JP’s dealings with clients. Professionalism of course involves all of the above points plus courteousness, respect, and an avoidance of prejudice. A JP needs to ensure that the information and confidentiality of a client is secure.
