Weddings inspired by film and TV

WEDDINGS INSPIRED BY FILM & TV

Do you and your partner have a shared interest that reaches geek levels? Are you thinking about doing something a bit different to the traditional “white wedding”? Can you imagine your qualified celebrant in a wizard’s robe or a Disney princess dress?

Here’s a little inspiration to help highlight the possibilities.

ZOMBIE MY BABY TONIGHT

If you follow American football AKA gridiron you may know the name DeAngelo Williams. In 2016 the former NFL running back married his girlfriend, Risalyn, in a Walking Dead themed ceremony. The Walking Dead for those who may not be aware, is a popular zombie apocalypse TV show. Not only did Williams have a makeup artist transform him and his bride into zombies, but also all of their guests. This of course made for some great pictures and video. You don’t have to go to such extremes but even just having an undead couple and bridal party, a few decorations or even a zombie-themed cake topper (as in the pic,) can make for some real quirky fun that your guests will never forget.

WHEN STARS ALIGN

Star Wars-themed weddings are pretty popular for good reason. It’s one of the most loved and highest grossing film franchises of all time. There is a lot to work with for a Star Wars themed wedding. My sister had a Leia-esque dress and on the top of her and her husband’s wedding cake stood 2 figurines; Princess Leia and Han Solo. That was their light nod to a common love. Some take it to even greater extremes and when you are inspired by fantastical worlds, your imagination is your limit.

I LOVE YOU IN EVERY UNIVERSE

I mentioned Star Wars as being one of the highest grossing film franchises of all time. As massive as it is it comes second to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in that one metric. The MCU is a capacious world to draw ideas from. There’s just about a character to represent any one of us normal humans. Costumes don’t have to be extravagant, just fun, colourful and have some resemblance to their source of inspiration. You could have your qualified celebrant* dress as anyone from Nick Fury to the Scarlet Witch.

EVEN A MUGGLE WEDDING CAN BE MAGICAL

Make up for that disappointment at not receiving an acceptance letter to Hogwarts and craft a wedding that lover of life Luna Lovegood would be proud of. From the invitations to the decorations to costumes, Rowling’s magical world contains plenty of mystical fun to grab ideas from. There are plenty of great food ideas for starters. Wedding favours that contain Bertie Botts Every Flavour Beans, butterbeer on tap and you could set long wooden dining tables with an island of tall candles. And I’m sure the right celebrant would be more than happy to play along by wearing a robe and carrying a wand.

The year was 2013, and Napster founder and Lord of the Rings superfan Sean Parker decided to spend millions to create a fantastical wedding at California’s Big Sur. Over 350 guests were given Lord of the Ringsinspired costumes to wear and here’s the real kicker, the costumes were made by the film’s actual costume designer, Ngila Dickson. I won’t bang on any more about how ridiculously over the top this was however if you want a “Middle Earth” wedding but don’t have millions to splash out know that there are plenty you can do, even on a budget.

From dress to hairstyles to sets to jewellery and more, Tolkien’s world has offered up a lot of design inspiration for a LOTR fan’s big day.

I’M SO DISNEY MY HEAD IS SPINNING

How huge and full of character is the world of Disney? From costumes to songs there is much to draw from. A few years ago couple Garrett Smith and Jason Bitner decided to run with the Disney theme for their wedding and so dressed up as best friends Woody and Buzz Lightyear (Toy Story). Their whole wedding party and parents also dressed in costume for the occasion. Their first dance was to Toy Story’s “You’ve got a Friend in Me.” The table decor was inspired by Disney films, and they even hung some of their Disney VHS tapes as decorations.

Casablanca – It’s a black and white classic that has stood the test of time. From the noir feel to the suave and glamourous early 40s attire, where people made an effort in their dress just to go down to the shops, this would be a wedding theme with class. You could lay out a Mediterranean menu for the reception. You could hire a piano player to put the cherry on top and give you your “Play it, Sam. Play As Time Goes By” moment.
