7 WEDDING TRENDS BORN OUT OF COVID

Istock-1089390306

With near elimination of weddings in 2020 and smaller, localised weddings in 2021, one has to wonder if some of the concessions made to ensure weddings went ahead over the last couple of years will carry over into weddings of the future.

It seems that there are a few ideas that were implemented under restrictions that are looking to trend. Here are a few.

NICE DAY FOR A TIGHT WEDDING

The last couple of years have done nothing if not help us to appreciate our tight network of friends and family. Many have found bravery in culling lists to keep things tight. It’s a great way to save money too.

NATURE IS A VENUE

With restrictions differing between indoor and outdoor settings, many have chosen to use the great outdoors as their wedding venue. Some chose to have the ceremony outdoors and the reception indoors and some go the whole hog and relish the sky as their ceiling.

MEALS ON WHEELS

As more couples are opting for outdoor weddings, non-traditional options for catering are finding their way into the reception. It is not so strange to see barbeques, pizza ovens, local cafes or restaurants catering or even food trucks.

LIFE IS BUT A STREAM

It’s a beautiful attribute of the digital age that if family and friends can’t make the wedding due to border closures, number restrictions (or you secretly don’t want them there,) that they can still attend virtually by logging in to a live stream. It’s a great way to connect with loved ones around the world.

SHOW ME YOUR TRUE COLOURS

In a crazy new world, many are chucking time-worn traditions and deciding to visually create weddings that are more aligned with their personalities. It will be a long time before the traditional wedding palette is completely abandoned but whether it’s injections of vibrant colours or a prismatic explosion, more couples than ever are choosing to explore the world of colour with their decorations and even attire.

FUR BETTER OR FUR WORSE

Pet-friendly weddings is trending. Many pet owners consider their fur-babies or feather-babies or scale-babies a part of their family. It makes sense that Bingo would be invited to the wedding. There are even businesses that will create wedding outfits for your pets.

DRIVE ME TO THE MOON

Local honeymoons have pretty much been enforced through travelling restrictions but as more see adventure in exploring what is close to home, it looks to be a continuing trend. I have to say that my wife and I were well ahead of this 17 years ago (or was it 18? 16?) when we got married. Our local honeymoon was more out of the desire to save money more than anything, but we found a place near the beach about a 2-hour drive from our home. We decided to find as many free or relatively cheap local tourist destinations to explore. We found a creepy doll exhibition, climbed to the top of a replica castle, had ginger ice-cream at a ginger plantation and pretty much had a blast without blowing a down-payment on a house.
