About this course
Grief touches everyone, and knowing how to be there for someone makes a real difference. Many of us want to help but worry about saying the wrong thing.
This short course introduces the key principles of grief and loss and turns them into everyday practice: how grief can show up, how to listen and be present, what helps (and what doesn't), and when to encourage someone to seek further support. You'll also learn how to care for yourself while supporting others.
What you'll learn
- Common grief responses and the ways people experience loss
- How to listen well and simply be present
- What to say, and what to avoid, when someone is grieving
- How to respect cultural and spiritual differences around death and loss
- How to recognise when someone needs professional support, and how to refer them
- How to look after yourself with self-care and healthy boundaries
Who it's for
- Celebrants, chaplains and pastoral care workers
- Carers, volunteers and community or church workers
- Managers and colleagues supporting a grieving team member
- Anyone who wants to support family and friends through loss
This course builds practical support skills. It isn't a counselling qualification. Want to go further? Explore our Certificate IV in Chaplaincy and Pastoral Care.
